Scaffold for Solar Installation, Primrose way, Southampton - Price £600

Project summary

This case study examines the scaffolding requirements and execution for a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system installation at a residential property on Primrose Way, Southampton. The primary objective was to provide safe, compliant high-level access to the main roofline, ensuring smooth and efficient handling of solar panels and associated equipment throughout the project.

Technical scaffolding specification

This scaffold structure spanned approximately 8.0 metres across the entire working zone and was constructed to a height of around 5.0 metres, allowing direct roof access for the installation team. Safety and functionality were paramount: the design included a single working lift (platform) for staging materials, promoting optimal ergonomics and a safe working posture for the technicians. The platform’s depth varied from 7 boards deep in the main work area to 5 boards deep near the eaves, maximising stability and manoeuvrability in line with current safety regulations.

To further enhance safety, we installed double handrails (guardrails) along all open edges to protect operatives from falls. We fitted toe boards around the perimeter to prevent tools or equipment from slipping off the platform. Secure ladder access was incorporated into the scaffold by our scaffolders, complete with a ladder gate to restrict unauthorised entry and ensure operatives could safely ascend and descend between levels. These features provided the necessary headroom and secure footing, essential for safe working at height, and fully aligned with best practice and regulatory requirements.

Logistics and financials

A four-week scaffolding hire was arranged to cover the entire installation process, from the initial setup through to dismantling and removal. The total cost for this bespoke scaffolding solution, including erection and all safety features, was £600.00, providing a cost-effective, robust, and fully compliant access system for this solar installation project and ensuring satisfaction with the project’s financial aspects.

Project outcome

The completed scaffolding structure performed flawlessly, providing an indispensable, stable, and secure platform for the solar installation team. Its tailored dimensions, double handrails, toeboards, and controlled ladder access via a ladder gate contributed to rapid material handling and a safe working environment. These measures ensured that the project was delivered on schedule and to a high safety standard, significantly contributing to the successful completion of the Solar PV system installation at this Southampton residence.
