Customer requirements: We were asked to provide a quotation to erect a freestanding scaffold to the front and side elevations of a 2-storey property on Macnaghten Road, Southampton. This scaffolding was needed to render all 3 sides plus a small return on the right-hand elevation. This structure was an independent scaffold, so additional bracing was required to ensure stability. We quoted the customer a price which included 6 weeks’ hire.

Issues faced: This was a straightforward scaffold to erect and dismantle. Both side elevations of the property were pretty narrow, and the neighbour’s permission was required to allow part of the structure to be placed on their land, which they were happy to agree to; other than that, it was a very straightforward project.

What we did

• We erected an independent (free-standing) scaffold of approximately 13 linear metres along the left-hand side, 10 linear metres across the front, and 8 linear metres along the right side, with a 2.4m return and a further 5m run along the remaining side of the house.
• The structure was approximately 3m high, with a single working platform to complete the rendering work safely.
• All scaffold lifts were fully boarded and varied from 3 to 4 scaffold boards deep.
• Our scaffolders installed double handrails and toe boards along the perimeter of each working lift.
• This independent scaffold structure was required to be 150mm away from the wall so all areas of the property could be rendered without tubes in the way while our customer completed this task.
• Additional support was needed to ensure the scaffold’s stability, so we cross-braced the entire scaffold.
• We provided fixed ladder access and a ladder access gate to the front elevation.
